Job Description:
The Maritime College of the State University of New York is seeking a Senior Lecturer and Vice Chair of the Engineering Department for one of the nation's six state and regional maritime academies. The department teaches ABET-accredited engineering programs and prepares students for licensure as engineering officers in the Merchant Marine.
The duties of the Vice Chair will include administration of the USCG-approved engineering training program, planning and directing engineering training activities aboard the College's 17,500 ton training vessel during the annual Summer Sea Term, teaching appropriate courses during the academic year ashore, and generally assisting the department chair.
This will likely be a term appointment in qualified academic rank with a calendar year obligation renewable by mutual consent, but not eligible for continuing appointment. However, candidates possessing suitable academic credentials may be considered for appointment at the rank of associate professor with the possibility of being granted continuing appointment in the future.
Requirements:
The successful candidate should (A) possess an advanced degree in an engineering discipline appropriate to the College's engineering programs in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Facilities Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, or otherwise be qualified by virtue of extraordinary experience and academic achievement for appointment to a senior lecturer position, (B) have previous administrative experience in budget control, personnel management, and training development, and (C) possess or be eligible to obtain a valid a management-level USCG engineering license for steam and motor vessels of unlimited horsepower, with a current STCW certificate.
Having previous experience administering USCG/STCW requirements and procedures for licensure of marine engineering officers is desirable, as is industrial experience, especially in the marine industry, and registration as a Professional Engineer.
